As a student at Marywood, there is a lot of opportunity to get involved and further explore the Comm Arts department. One of the newer extra-curriculars I got involved in this semester is a site called, The Odyssey. It’s a website with articles written on all different topics and in a variety of styles (based on the writer). It’s a site for college students who want to work on their writing, or just to let their voice be heard.
As a writer for The Odyssey, you get to write about whatever you want–anything you’re passionate about–which is AWESOME if you’re someone interested in strengthening your writing skills, looking to put something on your resume, or if you enjoy getting creative and finding ways to reach people with your words.
You learn a lot by being on the other side as the writer and not the reader, and it’s certainly a challenge to come up with a topic every week that will appeal to people. But, it helps you expand your mind and think outside of the box. You develop a stronger style, too.
Every week articles are due for editing a few days before they are published. Once they go out, you start sharing them on social media for all your friends and/or family to read. And at the end of the week, the person on your campus with the most amount of shares is announced the winner and receives a $20 reward. Not only is it fun to have such freedom as a writer, but it can actually make you money. Honestly, it’s a win-win. You get to work on your skills, extend your resume, have fun, reach out to people, and have the chance to make money in the process. You really can’t beat it.
I’m really glad I decided to get involved as I am learning a great deal in the process. I’m expanding my vocabulary, challenging my point of view, understanding and appealing to an audience, defining my style, and learning how to structure articles. Writing for The Odyssey has been an enjoyable and valuable experience–one that is better preparing me for my career and helping frame my future.. and I’m not even a journalism major!
