Marywood’s Comm Arts Department has another media organization to add to its lineup: a new student group called Marywood Media Group (MMG).
“MMG acts as an umbrella,” said Dr. Lindsey Wotanis, associate professor of broadcast journalism. The new organization will serve to coordinate activities and resource-sharing among all Comm Arts media-related organizations.
One leader from each of the Comm Arts organizations serve on the MMG board. Those organizations offer lots of field work for broadcast journalism, digital media, and advertising/public relations. Here are MMG’s member groups:
- 91.7 VMFM radio station
- American Advertising Federation (AAF)
- Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA)
- Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ)
- The Wood Word
- TV Marywood
The Marywood Media Group (MMG) was founded by three students in May 2016, developed during the summer and put into action this fall. The group had its premiere at the Comm Arts Department’s first student-faculty meeting in September. Students holding an elected or hired position with any of the Comm Arts groups and those who are members in good standing of those groups are automatically members of MMG.
October Plans for MMG
The MMG Executive Board, which includes the station managers of TV Marywood and 91.7 VMFM, editor-in-chief of The Wood Word, and presidents of Marywood’s PRSSA/AAF and SCJ Chapters and SCJ, is spearheading a Krispy Kreme doughnuts coupon fundraiser through Oct. 12 to help defray the cost of new reporter-style jackets to promote MMG. All Comm Arts students can participate in the fundraiser.
The Executive Board will also be heading to Atlanta for the annual College Media Association convention in late October. When they return from this convention, they will share things they’ve learned, like how to improve coverage of campus events, to sharpen writing and editing skills, and to connect with important people in our field.
