Seven members of The Wood Word ventured to New York City for the Spring 2017 National College Media Association (CMA) journalism convention. The convention was planned as a three-day event from March 11-14, but because of the forecasts of the Stella Blizzard, the members were there March 12-13.
CMA is a national organization for professionals, students and advisers engaged in creating all forms of college student-produced media. The Marywood Media Group also attended the Fall 2016 CMA National Convention in Atlanta.
Editor-in-Chief Rachel Looker and staff members John Ferraro, Jessica Bonacci, Ali Sidiki, Dylan Wright, Bethany Wade and I got to hear from professionals in various media jobs. Speakers included Mara Schiavocampo, a two-time Emmy Award-winning correspondent for ABC News, who gave a keynote session about networking and building relationships.
Each day there were sessions and workshops to improve the content and workflow of a variety of topics for newspapers, magazines, TV stations, radios, multimedia and photography. Some popular sessions were how to do investigative journalism, how to write effective leads, workflows in the newsrooms, the consequences of fake news, using social media, building a diversity staff, photojournalism and more.
Some attendees were chosen by lottery to attend media tours, since NYC is the media capital of the world. These students were able to see a glimpse behind the scenes at major media operations, like Bloomberg News, BuzzFeed, Good Morning America, Rolling Stone and Wall Street Journal. The Wood Word’s editor-in-chief Rachel Looker attended the Wall Street Journal tour.
“My favorite part was going on the Wall Street Journal tour and seeing a real newsroom at a large newspaper,” Looker shared. “We were also able to speak to an editor and ask questions about becoming journalists, which was really interesting and informative.”
The Wood Word staffers created connections and brought back advice to share with the other students in the Comm Arts Department. It was a great opportunity!
